Yr Wyddor Gymraeg
Limited edition linocut print (unframed)
17.6 x 25.2 cm (printed area)
Number of prints in the edition: 10
Each print is numbered, titled, and signed in soft pencil beneath the printed area.
‘Yr wyddor Gymraeg’ draws on the tradition of embroidery samplers and takes the Welsh alphabet as its subject. The Welsh alphabet has no K, Q, V, X, or Z, but it does have Ch, Dd, Ff, Ng, Ll, Ph, Rh, Th as initial letters. The letter J has recently been included in the alphabet on account of imported words like garej. However, as it is a non-initial letter, I excluded it from the sampler.
I have hand-pressed the edition with a baren and silver spoon onto soft-white Zerkall Printing (a mid-weight 145 gsm archival paper mould-made from part cotton rag). Each sheet has been hand-torn to create faux deckles and each measures approximately 26.5 x 38 cm. I have retained the original deckles where the sheets allowed. The ink used is Hawthorn carbon black stay open oil-based ink.
When proofing the print, I tried out various papers and inks, including two Japanese papers (Sunome Senaka, a bright-white 52 gsm paper, and Awagami Hosho, a 90 gsm paper). Given the nature of the print, I decided to edition on Zerkall as the off-white colour and texture of the paper lends the prints are more aged and muted quality. To enhance this effect I have not sought total coverage with the ink, but aimed rather at a more grainy appearance. This texture varies from area to area across individual prints.
I have retained one artist proof on Sunome Senaka, and one artist proof on Hosho paper, both of which I hand-pressed in Intaglio Carbon Black oil-based ink. Please contact me if you are interested in either of these.
