Linocut workshops
I run individually tailored 1-2-1 linocut workshops from my home studio in Llanfairfechan, North Wales. The workshops are suitable to beginners and to those who want to refresh their skills. Dates are by mutual arrangement.
You can bring a design with you to work with, or I can supply templates as a starting point. If you’re new to the process, I generally suggest working on a sampler. Samplers enable you to explore a wide range of marks and can be scaled to ensure that you can cut and press a print on the day. A beginner’s workshop typically covers:
Safe use of tools
Preparing lino in advance of mark-making
Straight, curved, hatched lines, and clearing
Graduated lines, cross-hatching, stippling, and tonal shifts
Thinking through a design in monochrome
Transferring a design onto the block
Working on your block
Inking and pressing a print
Cleaning and maintaining tools
You’ll have the opportunity to create impressions on a variety of different papers and to work upon both soft and grey lino. At the end of the day, you’ll have your own prints to take home with you, and I will provide you with details on where to source your own tools and paper should you be interested in taking up linocut at home. Please note that the workshops, like my work, are in black ink on white ground.
Tuition and materials cost
£130 per full day, including the use of tools and materials. A light lunch and also tea and coffee during the day are included in the cost. Workshops start at 9:30 am and end at 5 pm unless agreed otherwise.
Llanfairfechan is ninety minutes drive from Liverpool city centre and less than two hours drive from the centre of Manchester. The village is connected by train to London and is a great touring spot for walking in Eryri (Snowdonia) and for visiting the wonderful beaches of North Wales.
