Two Happies
Limited edition linocut print (unframed)
14.3 x 15.6 cm (printed area)
Number of prints in the edition: 11
Exhibited at the Derby Print Open Exhibition, 2023.
‘Two Happies’ is a limited edition print which grew out of a series of conversations with Belgian wordsmith, artist and educator, Amandine Robaey, during which we deconstructed the word ‘happy’. The result was a poem entitled ‘Sixteen kinds of happy’. Amongst the sixteen happies were the notions ‘wrong happy’ and ‘forbidden happy’.
In discussing how we might represent this idea visually, we settled upon the form of a tree. ‘Two Happies’ is an initial shaping of this tree. I aim to produce a larger piece in the future which represents all sixteen ‘happies’ and which will be called ‘The Happy Tree’.
‘Two Happies’ has been hand-pressed to Somerset Satin, a luxurious 250 gsm gentle-textured English archival paper mould-made from 100 % cotton at St. Cuthbert’s Mill, Wells. I have hand-torn the sheets to create faux-deckles; each sheet measures approximately 20.5 x 28 cm. The image is pressed using a Kean ball-bearing baren and silver spoon and inked with Hawthorn Stay Open carbon black oil-based ink.
Each print is numbered, signed, dated, and titled in soft pencil beneath the printed area.
