The Same Day
Limited edition linocut print (unframed)
14.5 x 14.5 cm (printed area)
Number of prints in the edition: 25
‘And the evening and the morning were the first day… the second day… the third… the fourth… the fifth… the sixth…’ It is a phrase repeated in Genesis, chapter 1, and one which struck me in its reversal of the stereotypical morning-afternoon-evening passage of time. Day begins in the evening and makes of night its day. In The Same Day, I play with the text and use the sun-moon’s wheel to give the phrase a Sisyphean twist.
I have hand-pressed each print in the edition to Somerset Satin Paper (250gsm) using a silver spoon. The soft texture of the paper, combined with hand-burnishing and the use of Hawthorn’s oil-based carbon black ink, lends the firmament in the print a deliberately granular and iridescent sheen.
The edition is limited to 25 prints in total, each pressed to hand-torn sheets measuring approximately 20 x 20 cm. I have signed, titled, numbered and dated each print in soft pencil beneath the printed area.
