Sometimes the world can appear black, and at such times it helps to recall the good things in life. To note them. Such was the idea behind ‘The Book of Good Things, Verse 25’. The poem that forms the substance of the work was one that I wrote when thinking about the easily forgotten beauty of the world. Its small things. A carved stone suggested itself as a means of presenting the thought visually: it makes a solid thing, a frozen moment. Adding a verse number makes of the stone something biblical. The poem reads:

Blue butterfly over the brassica
Bird-cherry golding its leaves
Snow lain down upon hedgerows
Blackbird’s high notes in a tree

Carved in battleship grey lino, the piece forms one of a series of studies made for an ongoing and larger work.

I have hand-pressed each print to Awagami Bamboo Select with the aid of a ball-bearing baren and a silver spoon. Bamboo Select is a mid-weight archival Japanese washi paper (170 gsm) made from 70 % bamboo and 30 % recycled pulp. It has a small ecological footprint and a pleasing weight. The sheets have been hand-torn to create faux deckles; each sheet measures approximately 21.5 x 26.5 cm. The ink used is Hawthorn Stay Open Carbon Black oil-based ink.

The edition is limited to 15 prints, each of which I have signed, dated, numbered and titled in soft pencil beneath the printed area.
