Study of the head of a girl
Monotype print on Somerset Satin paper (unframed)
14 × 18 cm printed area
Edition of 1 (unique print)
‘Study of the head of a girl’ is a monotype print made after Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Head of a maiden’ (a study for an angel in ‘Virgin of the Rocks’, Musei Reali-Biblioteca Reale, Turin, 16 × 18.2 cm).
I am very much taken by da Vinci’s use of line and have made a number of pencil drawings in my journal of his work in order to explore his technique. This print is based upon one of these drawings and was made by taping a copy of my drawing to the reverse side of a sheet of archival paper and then drawing through the back of the paper to ‘press’ the image from a glass plate onto which I had rolled out a flat layer of ink. I used hard pencil (2H) to press the fine lines, and a 2B pencil for the broader lines. The paper is a 250 gsm white Somerset Satin, the grain of which serves to create the stippled effect. The ink is Hawthorn Stay Open Carbon Black. I have hand-torn to the paper to approximately 18 × 24 cm and have signed and numbered the print (1/1) to the right beneath the printed area.
