Melancholy Happy Study 2
Open edition linocut print (unframed)
10 x 8 cm (printed area)
Melancholy Happy Study 2 is an open edition linocut study that I cut when exploring texture, form, and composition for my limited edition print Melancholy Happy. In particular, I was keen to explore how to cut the bird’s feathers, and the scale at which I could work. I used a small v-gouge to do all of the cutting for the bird and most of the cutting throughout the remainder of the piece.
The study is hand-pressed to 250 gsm Somerset Satin paper with a silver spoon. I have hand-torn the sheets to create faux deckles; each sheet measures approximately 15 x 15 cm. The ink used is Hawthorn’s Stay Open carbon black oil-based ink. Each impression is signed and titled in soft pencil beneath the printed area, but as this is an open edition the prints are not individually numbered.
