Crawia
Limited edition wood engraving (unframed)
7.5 x 5 cm (printed area)
Number of prints in the edition: 40
‘Crawia’ are a form of fence common to the slate quarrying areas of North Wales. Made from waste slate (‘craw’ in Welsh), they can be found lining village streets, dividing fields, and in the case of this print, keeping sheep safe from the sea.
Based on a series of field sketches that I made of a short stretch of crawia along the shore of the Afon Menai west of Llanfairfechan, the engraving was made on a maple wood block and then hand-pressed to Somerset Satin paper using a silver spoon.
Somerset Satin is a 250 gsm English archival paper mould-made from 100% cotton. It has a pleasing weight and a gentle texture. I have hand torn sheets in the edition to create faux deckles and each sheet measures approximately 19 x 14 cm. The ink used is Hawthorn’s carbon black stay open ink.
The edition is limited to 40 prints in total, each of which is signed, titled, dated, and numbered in soft pencil beneath the printed area.
