Beginning and End
Limited edition linocut print (unframed)
10 × 15 cm printed area
Number of prints in the edition: 10
Beginning and End is one of a number of studies that I have made for a larger work under the title of Firmament, Fourth Day. Based upon a line-work pencil sketch, in this print I wanted to explore how I might translate the black line on white ground of the original sketch into a combination of white line and black line on dark ground in a print.
The print is hand-pressed to hand-torn sheets of 250 gsm Somerset Satin paper, the sheets themselves measuring approximately 18 × 24 cm. The ink used is Cranfield Traditional Letterpress, Seville Black — a semi transparent ink made from carbon black with a hint of orange. Working together, paper and ink combine to give a subtle tone to the finish of the print, and a granular quality which suits perfectly the subject.
The edition is limited to 10 prints in total.
